Visit the smallest town in Belgium
Overlooking the rocky cliff, the castle has a very romantic atmosphere. At its feet lies a small medieval town that has stood the test of time excellently. Surrounded by hills and forests, "the smallest city in the world" has survived everything. Durbuy is located in Belgian Luxembourg, in the heart of the Belgian Ardennes. Its round shape betrays that the river once completely surrounded it. Originally an island, well protected by the river, castle and city wall, 550 meters long and more than 6 meters high, the construction of this wall is linked to the franchise charter signed in 1314 by Jean l'Aveugle, Count of Luxembourg and king of Bohemia. This charter, which sets out the rights and obligations of the city of Durbuy, stipulates that the residents themselves must ensure their own safety and justice. Durbuy was then an important trading city. The "community house" of yesteryear was replaced in the 16th century by a new building that would later be called the korenmarkt. This hall, with its remarkable framework, had various functions. For example, it housed a covered market. Today it is an excellent setting for art exhibitions.
