The Hotton Caves, an extraordinary geological gem.

The Hotton Caves, an exceptional natural heritage in the heart of the Ardennes and rated with two stars by the Michelin Guide. The caves were created because rainwater infiltrated the limestone plateau and eventually returned to the earth's surface via an underground river at Hampteau. They are created by a slow chemical solution of limestone and partly by wear of the water with a little sand in it. The six-kilometer-long tunnels reach a depth of about 70 meters below the plateau. In the lowest part there is a permanent underground river.

Caves of Hotton

“The Hotton Caves are a geological wonder, a real pearl of the Belgian Ardennes. You descend 65 meters deep to the underground river. Then you come up again, 30 meters on foot and 35 meters with the lift. This trail makes it clear how exceptionally diverse the shapes and shades of the deposits in the cave are. ”
